How to sign in and claim your record
- Go to motus.dot.gov yourself. Type the address instead of following a link from an email or text.
- Create a user profile through Login.gov.
- Verify your identity.
- Set up your business account and verify it. If your company already has a USDOT number, claim that existing record.
- Apply for the registrations you need or manage the ones you have.
FMCSA charges $0 for the USDOT number itself. Some older FMCSA pages still give instructions for the URS and the Portal, the systems carriers used before Motus. Where those differ from current Motus guidance, follow Motus.
What Motus changed about your numbers
- Existing USDOT numbers carry over. You claim yours in Motus.
- MC, MX and FF prefixes stay.
- Each new authority type gets its own docket number, and new numbers are assigned at random.
- Your MCS-150 month and year still come from the digits of your USDOT number. Your MC number plays no part in it.
What pending means in Motus
You can haul only once your authority shows active. Pending means FMCSA is still waiting on something. The reasons Motus lists include these:
| Pending reason | What it's waiting on | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| FMCSA review | Review and publication in the FMCSA Register | Watch for publication. The rule allows protests within 10 days after it |
| BOC-3 | Your process agent's filing | Ask your agent to confirm it filed. See BOC-3 |
| Financial responsibility | Your insurer's liability filing | Ask your insurer to confirm it filed. FMCSA guidance calls for it within 20 days of publication |
If the insurance filing doesn't arrive in time, FMCSA serves a decision that gives you 60 days to comply before dismissal. Go by the deadline in your decision. Pending authority walks through each stage.
MCS-150 updates during the switch
FMCSA paused enforcement of the MCS-150 biennial update, along with USDOT inactivation for missing it, for updates due on or after June 1, 2026. The notice was updated September 10, 2026 and gives no end date or new deadline.
The update is still required and still costs $0 in Motus. See MCS-150 for your month.
UCR changed its instructions for the pause too. Its registration site asks you to declare the power units you run across state lines. See UCR.
Reinstatement after the switch
Registration management now runs through Motus, though FMCSA's reinstatement FAQ still points to the old Portal. Start in Motus or contact FMCSA for help.
The reinstatement fee is $80. See reinstatement.
Protect your record during the switch
- Bind your insurance renewal several business days early, then check that the new filing shows on your record.
- Check any notice yourself instead of calling the number in it. Go to motus.dot.gov or fmcsa.dot.gov and look at your record.
If a message asks you to fix your Motus account through a link, read how to spot a fake notice before you click anything.
Ready for Loads isn't affiliated with FMCSA or Motus.
Check your record after every change. The status check shows your authority and insurance filing as the latest FMCSA data has them. Check your status
