What car hauler owners report paying
Three car hauler owners on trucking forums gave a yearly or monthly figure. Three is too few for a range, so each one stands alone.
| Owner report | Amount | Coverage they listed |
|---|---|---|
| Car hauler, owner with 8 years' driving experience | $14,000 a year | |
| Florida, after switching insurers 3 months in | $1,351 a month, down from $2,700 | |
| New Jersey | $2,500 a month | General liability, physical damage and cargo |
Switching insurers cut the Florida owner's bill from $2,700 to $1,351 a month, three months in. Compare your quote line by line before you compare the price, since only the New Jersey owner listed what the policy covered. The cost page has reports for other equipment.
The federal minimum for a car hauler
For an interstate for-hire car hauler at 10,001 lb GVWR or more, the federal minimum is $750,000 in public liability, the same as other general freight. A fleet made up only of lighter vehicles has a $300,000 floor. These are liability floors, so they don't cover the cars you carry, and hazardous cargo has its own schedule of limits.
A pickup pulling a car trailer follows the same CDL thresholds as any hotshot: Class A at 26,001 lb combined with a trailer over 10,000 lb. Hauling fewer cars doesn't change the rating. A tractor with a car-hauling semitrailer is Class A once its weights or ratings meet the same trigger.
FMCSA won't grant the authority until your insurer's liability filing is in effect. Your cargo limit comes from the marketplaces and brokers below, since no federal cargo filing applies to the cars you carry. The filings page walks through each form.
What car hauling boards check
Super Dispatch and Central Dispatch are car hauling marketplaces, and both check your insurance before you can book through them. Their own pages listed these terms in October 2026.
| Board | Insurance check | Other conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Super Dispatch | A COI naming Super Dispatch as certificate holder, uploaded and also emailed by your insurer. No set cargo minimum to get verified. Insurance is monitored after that | Signed and dated W-9, any state permit you need and phone verification. Tow-away, driveaway and non-USDOT operations also need a business registration. Free carrier version, or Carrier Pro from $55 a month per seat |
| Central Dispatch | Valid insurance verified before your account activates, and monitored after | Operating authority verified before activation. Carrier Core from $139.95 a month plus tax |
Super Dispatch's cargo rule tightens when you book instantly. To use Book Now, you need:
- A verified profile with a valid USDOT number
- An active cargo limit that meets the load and the shipper's requirements
- Your largest trailer capacity on record
- More than three completed-load ratings and more than five successful loads
- Your FMCSA business start on record, with at least 90 days on your MyCarrierPortal DOT date
- Late cancellations under 10%
- Rating performance over 80%
Price the cargo limit for the loads you plan to haul. A limit below what a load needs keeps you off instant booking for that load.
What brokers ask for
Brokers outside these boards set their own bar, and 20 of the 21 that publish a liability minimum on their own pages put it at $1 million or more. For cargo, 21 of the 22 that publish a minimum ask for $100,000 or more, so hold that figure up against what a full load of cars is worth.
The cargo insurance page covers what brokers check on a cargo certificate.
How to get quotes you can compare
- Name the trailer and the cargo limit. Give every agent the same truck, trailer, number of cars and cargo limit, so the prices line up.
- Ask what's in the price. The New Jersey owner's $2,500 a month included general liability, physical damage and cargo. Get each line priced on every quote.
- Describe the work accurately. List every car you'll load and the full radius you'll run, even if a smaller answer quotes lower.
- Keep shopping. The Florida owner cut the monthly bill by switching insurers three months in.
The quote comparison guide has a sheet for every line, and car hauler loads covers where the freight comes from.
Keep your filing active
A cancellation reaches FMCSA as a BMC-35 notice from your insurer, and the filings page explains when it takes effect.
Super Dispatch and Central Dispatch both keep monitoring your insurance after you're set up, so keep coverage in force through any notice period and get the replacement filed before the old policy ends.
Price the coverage that opens the most loads. Run your DOT or MC number through the load-ready check to see which brokers and programs will set you up today and the coverage that unlocks the rest. Load-ready check
