How to start a one-truck semi business: what it costs and what to do first

Updated

One tractor-trailer under your own authority takes a Class A CDL, a USDOT number, $300 MC authority, a BOC-3, UCR, apportioned plates, an IFTA license, Form 2290 and a drug and alcohol consortium. Those fees are small next to the rig and the insurance. One 2026 price table puts a used sleeper tractor at $60,000 to $80,000 and a used 53 ft dry van at $18,000 to $28,000.

Licenses and registrations for one tractor-trailer

A tractor and semitrailer need a Class A CDL when the combination is rated or weighs 26,001 lb or more and the trailer is rated or weighs over 10,000 lb. The rest of the list:

Item When it applies Cost
USDOT number Interstate trucks at 10,001 lb or more $0
MC authority Hauling other people's freight across state lines for pay $300 per authority type
BOC-3 Every carrier with authority $20 one-time to $125 a year (three published prices)
UCR Interstate carriers $46 for 2026, $55 for 2027 at zero to two power units
IRP apportioned plates Three or more axles or over 26,000 lb, in two or more jurisdictions Your base state's fees, split by your miles in each jurisdiction
IFTA license and decals Same weight line, two or more member jurisdictions Fuel tax settled in quarterly returns
Form 2290 Taxable gross weight of 55,000 lb or more $100 at 55,000 lb, plus $22 per 1,000 lb, up to $550 above 75,000 lb
Medical card Every interstate driver at 10,001 lb or more $89 to $150 per exam, good for up to 24 months
Drug and alcohol consortium CDL-required operations $85 to $170 a year (two providers' published fees)
Pre-employment drug test Before you drive $69 to $85
Clearinghouse query Before you drive, then at least once a year $1.25 each
ELD Drivers who must keep logs $249.99 for one published device with no subscription

These are October 2026 fees. The $20 BOC-3 can add a $67 mailing charge if you don't acknowledge electronic service within 10 days.

IRP fees come from your base state's schedule, since there's no national fee. One published DC example came to $1,580.75 for an 80,000 lb truck split evenly across DC, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, at older rates.

Form 2290 runs on a July to June tax year, currently July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. It's due by the last day of the month after the truck's first use on public highways.

As an owner-operator with a CDL, you're both the employer and the driver for testing. You join a random pool with at least two drivers, and FMCSA's 2026 minimum random rates are 50% for drugs and 10% for alcohol across the pool.

What the truck and trailer cost

Equipment Used price range
Day cab tractor $45,000 to $65,000
Sleeper tractor $60,000 to $80,000
53 ft dry van $18,000 to $28,000
53 ft reefer $28,000 to $45,000
48 to 53 ft flatbed $15,000 to $25,000

These ranges come from one 2026 price table that gives no exact date or sales sample, and they leave out tax, delivery and repairs. ACT Research's preliminary September 2026 average retail price for used Class 8 trucks, from a same-dealer sample, was $61,000. That average covers all Class 8 trucks, so it won't separate a day cab from a sleeper.

Diesel averaged $6.179 a gallon on U.S. highways the week of October 12, 2026, according to EIA. Your fuel bill is your miles divided by your miles per gallon, times that price. Count your empty miles too.

Insurance: what brokers ask and what owners report

The federal floor for general freight is $750,000 in liability, and brokers set their own bar. J.B. Hunt cites the $750,000 federal floor and sets no number of its own.

Among brokers that publish their minimums on their own pages, 37 of 39 want $1 million or more in liability and 36 of 37 want $100,000 or more in cargo.

Most premium reports on the forums leave the equipment unnamed. The 40 of those with a yearly or monthly figure have a median of $19,080 a year, counting monthly payments times 12. These reports named a semi, a tractor or a trailer type:

Owner report Amount Coverage they stated
One semi truck $1,200 a month
Peterbilt 379, about eight months into authority $1,000 a month Liability only
Tractor, first authority, eight years' driving experience $50,000 Tractor only, no period given
Flatbed, first year About $13,000 Truck and flatbed, liability only
Flatbed, eight years' experience $22,000 a year
Flatbed quote $36,000 a year
Tanker quote, California, 2024 About $1,900 a month $1 million liability
Commenter 10 years in $5,000 a year per truck

Two more reports at broker limits didn't name the equipment: $1,850 a month quoted on a new MC at $1 million liability and $100,000 cargo, and about $1,700 a month in California in 2022 for the same limits plus physical damage. Seven owner reports gave a down payment, from $2,000 to $6,000.

When brokers pay

Broker pay terms from their own pages, October 2026:

Broker Standard pay Faster pay
TQL 28 days 1 day at 5% or 7 days at 3% of gross pay
C.H. Robinson Within 28 days at no cost As little as 2 business days at 2%
J.B. Hunt 21 business days after all paperwork 2 business days at 1.5%, waived on Carrier 360 bookings
RXO 30 days after a complete invoice and signed POD Same-day payment initiated at 2.5%

Amazon Relay pays weekly. A dispatcher is optional, and one service publishes 5% per load or $275 a week for dry van, reefer and flatbed trucks. Compare quick pay and factoring before you sign anything that takes a cut of every invoice.

The new entrant audit in your first 12 months

FMCSA's safety audit for new carriers comes within 12 months after operations begin, and new-entrant monitoring runs 18 months. Keep records from your first load in each area it checks: driver qualification, drug and alcohol testing, hours of service, inspection and maintenance, insurance and safety management.

It has 16 automatic-failure violations, including no testing program, no random testing and no insurance. After a failure notice, you get 60 days to fix it.

For more, see dry van loads, semi truck insurance, IRP, IFTA, Form 2290 and the new entrant audit. File the USDOT and MC applications in Motus, FMCSA's own system.

Run your own numbers. Enter your tractor and trailer prices, your state, your miles and your insurance quote. The estimator adds the filings, plates, 2290, testing and fuel. Then it shows the cash you need before the first broker check. Startup cost estimator
