Trucking insurance companies on FMCSA filings

Updated

Your insurer files proof of your liability coverage with FMCSA, and those filings are public. This list counts them by insurer, so you can see who writes trucking liability and how much of it covers new authorities. The filings show the insurer and the coverage limit but never the price.

How to choose

  • Read the counts together. Both come from FMCSA's records and carry the date of the FMCSA file behind them. How insurance filings work explains the forms behind them.
    • Active filings: the liability filings (BMC-91 or BMC-91X) it has on record for carriers.
    • New authorities: the share of those filings on carriers whose authority was granted in the past 12 months.
  • Get prices from quotes and owner reports. Filings list the insurer, limit, form and effective date, but never what the carrier paid. See what owners report paying.
  • Shop at equal limits. Get every quote at the same limits so you can compare them line by line.
  • Check the insurer on your COI. Compare the name on your letter or COI with the insurer FMCSA has on file for you. If they don't match, ask your agent which company wrote the policy before you pay anything.

See who's on your filing. The status check shows the insurance filing FMCSA has for you, along with whether a cancellation is on file. Check your status

  • Act early on a cancellation. When an insurer cancels, it files a BMC-35 with FMCSA, and the cancellation ordinarily takes effect 30 days after FMCSA receives it, unless a replacement filing comes in first. Bind a new policy early and check that its filing posted before the old one ends.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see which insurer FMCSA has on file for me?

Run the status check. It pulls up the insurance filing FMCSA has for you, plus any cancellation on file, and you can hold that insurer's name up against your letter or COI.

Do FMCSA insurance filings show what a carrier pays?

No. Price never appears on a filing, which carries the insurer, the limit, the form and the effective date. For a sense of cost, 60 premium reports from owners on trucking forums put the middle half at $12,000 to $25,200 a year.

What are BMC-91 and BMC-91X filings?

Both are forms an insurer files with FMCSA as proof of a carrier's liability coverage. The status check reads whichever one is on your record.

When does a trucking insurance cancellation take effect?

Once your insurer files a BMC-35, the cancellation usually takes effect 30 days after FMCSA receives the form. A replacement filing that arrives before then keeps your coverage on record.
